My car.... [May. 15th, 2008|12:21 pm]

[mood | angry]

So yeah. I leased my car in May of '05.

We thought it was a 2 year lease. Oh were we wrong.

My mom wanted me to turn in my car.

But my lease isn't up for another 11 months.

Either way we'd have to pay over A THOUSAND DOLLARS to turn in my car.

I'm about to go over my miles. Awesome. So I could spend another $600 for 6000 more miles until next year. So that would mean very minimal driving. So awesome.

If I chose to turn in my car right now. Today. I'd have to pay $3200. Plus whatever damages that are with my car.

So yeah. Either way I have to spend thousands of dollars.

And it's looking like my car is sticking around for another year.

My mom has to pay $5000 on her car when she turns it in. Can honestly say that we're not leasing. Ever again.

America's Dwindling Fresh Water [May. 15th, 2008|09:49 am]

The Great Lakes: Photo by NASA

The Aral Sea, located between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, was once the fourth largest lake on the planet. Decades of irrigation works diverting water from the two rivers which fed it have left the sea today at 10 percent of the size it once was. Much of what remains is heavily polluted, devoid of fish, and surrounded by a great empty bed of salt which often blows into the surrounding areas, wrecking crops and contaminating drinking water. We might be tempted to write off the disaster as a consequence of the lumbering Soviet bureaucracy, something that could never happen in the States. But as the Plains face consecutive droughts and the Western states continue to burn, all eyes turn to the Great Lakes to fill the growing voids.

The EFuel 100 MicroFueler: Photo by E-Fuel
For those looking to get themselves off the grid—or at least move toward that ideal—a number of options are currently available. You can tack solar panels onto the roof of your house. You can erect a small wind turbine in your yard. You can now even distill ethanol in your garage. The EFuel 100 MicroFueler is a device the size of two very large refrigerators which will convert 490 pounds of feedstock (sugar and yeast) into 35 gallons of ethanol over the course of a week. Plug it in to any standard outlet and it will consume 150 watts for each batch. But while the concept of manufacturing your own fuel sounds appealing on its face, I'm not entirely sure the numbers add up to make it worth it.

Cuz if I went that would mean things were over... but cuz I'm sitting here. Waiting. We're okay...

But I really really REALLY wanted to go....

it feels hopeless... [May. 15th, 2008|10:32 am]

goodbyedebt

[xgirasolx]
Hi everyone.

I never thought I would be posting here but due to some bad decisions made with my first cc last year here I am.

Me- Almost 21, semi-unemployed, taking classes as I can't afford to enroll in college full time again, my parents told me I wasn't welcome anymore in their home last summer and I have been living with my boyfriend's family (strange I know) ever since. I have severe back problems that limit the work I can do but I don't have health insurance to get them to a point where I can work full time again. Its frustrating. Luckily, I have a job this summer that provides housing and food so all of my money can go to paying this off.

The debt: $264.00 on a Target Card and $1,387 on a Citi card. I haven't set up a payment plan or anything because I haven't had any money, literally, I haven't even been driving my car.

How should I go about tackling this? They are both overdue and I can't pay the minimums. What is the best way to do it so my credit isn't forever fucked?

Thank you for any advice... I know this debt seems like nothing compared to some people but it feels huge to me.

Dresses! [May. 15th, 2008|10:27 am]

screamingdolai
Kymbelina gets married in 10 days (10 days! WTF!) and I don't have a dress.  I went to both Nordstrom's and Bloomie's last night (I have their credit cards) and I couldn't find anything  in a decent price range that didn't exacerbate the genetic betrayal that is my legacy.  I did try on a Badgley Mischka gown that was absolutely stunning, but it was like 10x the amount I wanted to spend.  Bloody hell!  Any suggestions, ladies, for places to go for nice gowns that will be less than $200?

TiVo Product Lifetime Is Back for $399, $299 For Existing Subscribers [May. 15th, 2008|08:18 am]

It looks like TiVo's product lifetime service is back, and not as a special promotion this time. I won't say it is back for good, since it went away before, but there doesn't seem to be a set date for it to cease either.

This video was posted to YouTube last night (don't bother watching it, really) by user 'TiVoLifetime', with this description:
TiVo Product Lifetime is back by popular demand for folks who "Never Want to Give TiVo Up".

TiVo Product Lifetime service means consumers pay once up-front for the life of your DVR and never again. Product Lifetime service is priced at $399 for new customers and we offer a multi-service discount price of $299 if you are already a TiVo customer with a qualifying subscription.

In short, customers asked, we listened.
Could be a joke, right? Well, Product Lifetime service is back on the TiVo Price Plans page for $399.00. And that's without being logged in, it is available to everyone. The new pricing plans are $12.95/month, $129.00 annual, $299 three years, and $399.00 product lifetime.

And there's more - if you're an existing subscriber you qualify for Multi-Service Discount, and for the first time MSD also applies to Product Lifetime! Logged in the pricing options are $9.95/month, $99.00 annual, and $299.00 product lifetime. That's both surprising and very welcome.

These changes are further confirmed by the "TiVo service payment plans document", which is marked as updated in May 2008. The document states:
2. You may pay for the TiVo service on a monthly basis for one (1) year at $12.95 per month. Promotional Pricing may be available from time-to-time.

3. You may also pay annually for your TiVo service at $129 a year, prepay for three (3) years at $299 (renews annually after 3 years) or purchase a Product Lifetime Service (as described below) at $399. Promotional Pricing may be available from time-to-time.
The "TiVo Multi-service discount service agreement" has also been updated in May 2008, and now states:
1. Discounted TiVo service fee. The MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT reduces the 1-year Monthly TiVo service or TiVo Plus service subscription fee to $9.95 per month, $99 per year if paid annually, and $299 for Product Lifetime Service while in compliance with all applicable Initial Qualification and General Eligibility requirements on new eligible TiVo service subscription activations (not existing TiVo service subscriptions). 3-Year prepaid TiVo service plans are not eligible to receive the MULTI-SERVICE DISCOUNT. However, in accordance with the Initial Qualification and General Eligibility requirements set forth above, paid 3-year prepaid TiVo service plans may serve as the Qualifying Subscription. In the event two or more TiVo service plans are being purchased simultaneously, the Product Lifetime Service shall be considered the Qualifying Subscription and if no Product Lifetime Service is being purchased, then the highest priced prepaid service plan shall be the Qualifying Subscription.
There you have it - TiVo Product Lifetime is back!

Thanks to Dave Zatz for the heads up via IM - and he's posted at Zatz Not Funny as well.

...I am.

This is a silly post, but has anyone else ever wondered why fish is considered OK to be eaten with dairy? I always think it should be counted as fleishig, but then I still eat smoked salmon on cream cheese, so I guess I don't really have the courage of my convictions.

[mood | blah]

Too much shit has gone on in the 6 months it's been since I've last posted, and I'm in no mood to relive it if not completely necessary.

So hi! I'm still alive. Life's been topsy-turvy, ever-changing, exciting, shocking, discouraging, promising, inauspicious and... well, life.

Anyway, I'm trying to occupy my time with the company of those I care for. Canter's, Hustlers, Jumbo's must happen. This weekend may be a touch too soon, but I'm looking for something to do anyway. Getting drunk alone in your underwear is less satisfying than you'd think.

Anyway. I'm alive. Insane, but alive. Call me.
